Waking up everyday to the latest news emerging from the commercial property world, you almost wouldn’t expect someone like Robert De Niro to come top of the business charts when it comes to investing in property in the US and abroad. But the renowned actor has been granted the green light to build his luxury boutique hotel in the bustling, tourist epicentre of Covent Garden. Capital & Countries Properties PLC, also known as Capco, with Robert De Niro and BD Hotels have come together to build The Wellington Hotel, a luxurious 83 room hotel, which will also include a deluxe spa, a private members’ club and two subsequent restaurants, which will no doubt scream Michelin star status of superiority and delectable cuisine. Capco acquired the estate more than 10 years ago, and has since transformed Covent Garden into a vibrant, bustling and prestigious area of the capital; an area that comprises over one million square feet, with more than 40 million visitors every year.

The news may come as a surprise for many, but De Niro is already the proud owner of 20 restaurants and two hotels; one in New York and one in the Philippines. De Niro famous for his roles in Taxi driver, The Godfather, and Analyze This, will work alongside Ira Drukier and Richard Born, the same team that developed the Greenwich Hotel in New York’s Tribeca district. Their vision for London was to create a bespoke new concept for the hotel industry and would be built around a central courtyard conservatory. The hotel is situated between Wellington Street, Tavistock Street, Burleigh Street and Exeter Street, spanning six adjacent buildings; three of which are known for their Grade II listed status. hotel-entrance-robert-de-niro Photo credit: westminster.gov.uk  De Niro has commented: "My partners and I are pleased with the unanimous consent of Westminster City Council for The Wellington Hotel project in Covent Garden. We would like to thank them for putting their trust in our vision. We now look forward to starting the construction and to the completion of the hotel, of which we will all be proud.” Ian Hawksworth, Chief Executive of Capco, commented: “We are delighted to receive approval for this exciting project which will allow us to maintain the momentum of development throughout the estate. It will be our first landmark hotel within Covent Garden and become an iconic venue for London. Robert De Niro and BD Hotels have emerged as the world’s leading luxury hoteliers, so The Wellington Hotel will be a must-visit destination for visitors to the area.” hotel-courtyard-robert-de-niro-hotel Photo credit: westminster.gov.uk  Feature image credit: capitalandcounties.com
